Love is My Home
“Home” is a feeling we yearn and long for. The inner sense of safety, acceptance, and freedom we crave. How do we find it?
Hi Beautiful Being!
As we were killing time between Air BnBs, Lisa asked me: “Babe, are you sure we’re back in the Nith St. place tonight?”
“Let me check,” I replied as I pulled out my iPhone. “Oh shoot!” I continued, after I discovered—much to my chagrin—we did not have a booking for that evening. Doh!
You see, my wife got a dream job that—for the next 3-5 years—has her primarily working in Scotland, but based in Sicily. So, when we’re in the land of kilts, Outlander, and whisky, we stay in an Air BnB—doing our best to remain in the same one. Since the place on Nith St. [that’s not a typo, LOL], where we’ve primarily been this go around, wasn’t available over Memorial Day weekend, we made other arrangements.
Yet, amidst the chaos of travelling from Scotland to Paris and the U.S. over the last few weeks, both Lisa and I neglected to book a place for said Monday evening. So, we hopped on the Air BnB app to find a place last minute. And, viola, we discovered a cute (extra)tiny-home—perfectly located for Lisa’s commute.
But the story doesn’t end here. As we got settled in, I realized: THERE IS NO WIFI!!! While this may not seem worthy of all-caps, bold, and italics. Let me tell you. It is. Because, basically everything I do is (1) from “home” and (2) online.
And, that’s not even getting into how our nightly routine centers on watching Suits, which is impossible without Wi-Fi!
Originally, I planned to share this as a reminder:
When something is important, make sure you double-check things. And you’ll probably feel better—and can’t go wrong—if you triple-check. That’s being safe and thorough. But checking more? That’s just a slippery slope to driving yourself—and likely others—crazy.
Given my Wi-Fi predicament occurred because I failed to scan through the amenities, and our booking dilemma came about because of not rechecking the dates. I stand by this as a good takeaway. And, I believe something even better, came to me on my morning run from the (extra)tiny-home.
You know how they say: “Home is where the heart is”? Instead of watching Suits that evening, Lisa and I had a fabulous time chatting, joking, and playing rummy. Even though we were in a strange place—using a foldup table and chairs—it was cozy, comfortable, and all-around homey. Why?
Whenever we are within love, we are at home.
You know how in the early days of a sweetly sparkling romance, all of life takes on an ultra-high-definition beauty? Like you’re living the happy montage of scenes set to your favorite upbeat song in a movie? It’s because you’re within the bubble of love—the unconditional acceptance and approval that makes your soul sing like a choir of angels. (Note: I enjoy Despicable Me 2’s version of this, after Gru’s worst date ever ends with a kiss.)
Another glimpse you and I get of being within love comes when we’re in nature, soaking in the sights and sounds at a beach, letting a sunrise or sunset illuminate our hearts, and so on. There’s something about wordlessly connecting with mother nature that gets us out of our worried minds, and into our loving hearts.
I wonder: When have, and do you experience this—the at homeyness that comes with being held, nourished, and carried by love?
I find that space while practicing yoga, going for a walk with my wife, silently waiting for words to come as I write, getting lost in a song I love, contemplatively doing most anything, having a heart-to-heart conversation, going for a run, and in meditation—as some examples.
A common thread here—when it comes to living within love, and feeling at home—is getting out of our thought bubbles and into our hearts. Why? Because this radiant center in our chest is simultaneously a holding tank for our individual love, and the place where you and I “plug into” Big Love—that invisible, yet real force in the world, like gravity or electromagnetism, that unites, inspires, and elevates us.
With that in mind, I find the key is realizing:
Because love is always within and surrounding us, so too is the “home” you and I long for. It is indestructible, ever-present, and forever with, and within, you and I—regardless what’s going on outside of us.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I frequently forget this. Stresses, cares, worries, and many other things “evict” me. Yet, as true as that feels sometimes: Love—and the home it provides—never leaves me. I just get caught up, and forget they are here. That’s why having regular practices that help us remember and return—like meditation, contemplation, yoga, dance, being in nature, literally reminding ourselves and others of these truths, etc.—are vital.
So, to help you and I remember: I am within love, and I am home. You are within love, and you are home. I recorded a 2-minute meditation for you. Enjoy!
