Circles Connect
There is a circularity to creation and reality. From the sun, to the stars, to the cycle of life, and beyond, nature prefers a “circle”—perhaps there’s a message there for us …
Hi Beautiful Being!
In Blissology yoga we end our classes with a Circle of Light—during which we sit together in a circle/huddle, and meditate to bathe and bask in the light between and within us all. The effects are profound. People beam, hug, cry, share, heal, and so much more. It’s beautiful.
I bring this up because Eoin Finn, the founder of Blissology, recently shared the origin story of the Circle of Light. It came from the indigenous peoples, who recognized how creation has a circularity to it. In short, they realized the more they lived into this pattern, the more they thrived. While not doing so, brought discord and disharmony.
The imagery and truth of that has been working on me over these last few days. With America nearing a presidential election, which means the tribal voices of division and polarization are getting louder, I began to wonder. What if the circle is our cure?
Imagine Democrats and Republicans as being on the opposite sides of a circle. Now, for a circle to move, for a wheel to roll, doesn’t it need both sides? For us to progress as a nation—and more importantly, as a human family—then, we need both sides of the circle. What is more, notice how much space there is on the ring between the Left side and the Right side. Hmm. Perhaps that means we have more options than we think we have.
Furthermore, feel how gracefully the curve can slide you from the Right toward the Left, and vice-versa. Maybe it’s much easier for the two sides to move toward each other than some would have us believe.
Let’s look at it from another angle. Our current way of thinking puts Democrats and Republicans on two sides of a line. Think of it as a rope. While the circle has a natural motion and momentum to it—its nature is to roll—a line does not. It’s set up for competition, a tug-of-war. Do you know what I mean?
Now, since we’re thinking of the line as a rope, imagine drawing the two ends of it together. What does it form? A circle! Again, this gives me hope. It tells me we’re not stuck in the us vs. them battle we’ve collectively created.
A circle represents wholeness, unity, and completion. It’s our natural and intended state—and it’s not as hard as we think to get back to.
We see this Truth throughout creation. Our planet, the sun, the stars, birds’ nests, tree trunks, flowers, mountains, lakes, the human head, etc. all—to one degree or another—have a circularity to them. Even things in nature that aren’t “circular” and present more linearly—like rivers, cliffs, rocks, and even some lakes—generally have a roundness to them. In other words: There is a flow to reality, that creates the harmony upon which the crest of life rides.
I think here of how we’ve realized this relationally, by naming the family and friends we connect with, “my circle”. In our circles, there is light and love. There is care and compassion. There is trust and understanding.
In our circles there is LIFE.
Do you want to know something interesting about my circle? We are all over the place politically, spiritually, religiously, and so on. And it’s not a problem, because all “sides” belong in a circle. The “glue” that holds us together is compassion, kindness, understanding, curiosity, love, and grace.
And, if we “step back” and look at things: Aren’t we really all part of one Big Circle? The circle of interconnectedness that is life, creation, reality, and the human family.
With that in mind, my hope, wish, and prayer for you and I is to:
