A Sprinkle of Kindness: The Quickest Route to Happiness
Caring words and deeds create gladness—for the giver and receiver.
Hi beautiful being,
Do you know what feels really great all the way around? The simple thing that brightens you, and others, from the inside-out? A sprinkle of kindness.
When my partner makes dinner, she also plates my food, prepares my drink, and brings them out to me. This simple bit of kindness gladdens me every single time. What is more, it turns out that doing something caring for me, makes Lisa happy too!
You know those days when you’re feeling a bit down? That was me the other afternoon. Then, as I arrived for a meeting, the person warmly said: “It’s good to see you, Lang.” While I can’t say that instantly turned everything around for me, it definitely was the spark that helped turn my day from gloomy to bright.
Most mornings, I go for a run on the boardwalk that’s just up from the beach here in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. There are always a good number of people out going for a stroll, and usually at least another runner. A week or two ago, I started making a point of smiling and nodding at everyone I pass going the other direction—that is, if we look at each other. While there’s no way I can know what the exact affects are, you’d be surprised how often I get to witness people noticeably brighten up a bit. What is more, I can testify that personally this practice feels great.
I believe it’s because:
A sprinkle of kindness is the quickest route to happiness, for everyone involved.
With that in mind, let’s brainstorm a bit on ways to spread happiness. I’ll offer a few ideas, and invite you to share yours in the comments.
Messaging someone to let them know you’re thinking of them.
Leaving a good review.
Complimenting someone—even if you don’t know them. Lisa does this all the time with cashiers and servers, and it’s amazing!
Giving someone a hug.
That said, I’m keen to hear from you: What are some simple ways to sprinkle kindness?
Hugs & Love,
Lang (aka “Dr. Love”)
